Options Counseling

What is Options Counseling?

Options counseling is a way to help people—especially older adults, people with disabilities, and their caregivers— learn about different care choices of Long-Term Care Service. The goal is to give people the information they need so they can make their own decisions based on what they want and what they need.

During options counseling, a counselor talks with the person about services, community programs, and benefits that might help them. The focus is on helping the person stay in the place they choose, like their home or their community.

About Options Counseling

The aging process can feel confusing or overwhelming. There are many resources that can help you or your loved one as you get older, but it can be hard to figure out which ones you need. That’s where an Options Counselor can help.

An Options Counselor gives clear, unbiased information to help people find long-term care, transportation, and other services that make aging easier. They can also help you think about where to live—whether you want to stay in your home, move in with family, or look into a nursing home or assisted living. No matter what you choose, an Options Counselor can point you to the right services in your community.

An Options Counselor can meet with you by phone/virtual, in person, or by email. They will listen to your needs and help you decide the next steps for you or your loved one.

Eligibility

  • Options Counseling is a free service for adults aged 60+, people aged 18 years old or older who have a disability, and their family members and caregivers.
Eligibility example:

Betty is 82 years old, and she recently fell in her home. Her son lives in another state, and he is worried about her safety. Betty wants to stay in her house, but she isn’t sure if that is the best choice anymore. She feels confused about all the different types of help available and doesn’t know where to start. An Options Counselor met with Betty to talk about her situation and explain her choices. The counselor helped her understand the difference between getting help at home, moving to supportive housing, and other options. Betty decided to try home care services first. The counselor helped her sign up for the right programs. Now Betty feels confident about her decision and knows she has support.
